Our History
Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church was founded on June 16, 1870, when the Roach family donated land at 1234 Pisgah Road to build a house for the Lord. Under Rev. Fred Thomas, the first congregation was formed, supported by faithful deacons including John N. Harris, L.B. Morris, William Jones, Arthur Biggs, J.S. Price, William Swift, and Charles H. Williams.
The church was rebuilt in 1941 under Rev. Anderson and later enlarged in 1960 under Rev. Sampson Townsend, Sr., reflecting the congregation’s continued growth.
In 1976, Rev. Bassil Gardner Brooks became pastor, leading Mount Pisgah through decades of expansion and outreach. During his leadership, the church completed a new sanctuary addition (1983), dedicated the Family Life Center (1991), and established the Inner-City Outreach Ministry (2003) to serve the Memphis community.
The Family Life Center was later renamed in 2006 to honor Deacon Tom Henry Gray, and the Pisgah Woods Grounds were dedicated in 2012 to Pastor Brooks. The Pisgah Woods Brick Project, launched in 2016, continues to celebrate members past and present while supporting future community facilities.
In 2022, Mount Pisgah celebrated a major milestone with a Mortgage Burning Ceremony, signifying 176 acres of land paid in full. Following Pastor Brooks’ passing in 2023, the church’s leadership school was renamed in his honor.
IIn 2024, Rev. Stoney Burt Butler Jr. was installed as pastor. That same year, a portion of Macon Road was renamed for Laddie Morris Jr., and Mount Pisgah appointed its first female trustees—Dr. Betty Brown, Sis. Jocelyn Jones-Henderson, and Sis. Paula Henderson.
From its humble beginnings in 1870 to the present day, Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church remains a steadfast pillar of faith, love, and service—honoring the past while building a bright future for generations to come.
